Starboyz Stunt Fest ‘09

Sandusky, Ohio, was crammed with the mid-June Cedar Point crowd, making it tough to find a hotel. The town was also packed with tons of bikes everywhere for their annual bike week. The local police were cashing in on the bike scene, with someone pulled over on every corner. We (carefully) cruised ahead to Sandusky Speedway, having already driven a few hours from the home of BJ, an Ohio friend and old school stunt rider. JP said his usual hellos as we drove in, seeing StarBoyz’ own Kevin Marino right inside the gate. He hooked us up with wrist bands and media passes. His partner in crime, Scott Caraboolad, was all over the place, helping get everything ready for the weekend of action.

We pulled through the gate and checked out the riders. The StarBoyz event would be the one to go to if I were a pro. They have a local Yamaha shop, Power Sports 360, that generously provided a great giveaway to the event’s overall winner: a new Yamaha R6! This was on top of $10,000 in cash prizes for the event. The overall winner takes the bike and some cheese, so every point in each event was crucial – second place gets no bike. High stakes are what we all love and come out to see. This set the stage for great competitions with a sprinkle of drama.

The field was light on the nations’ best stunt riding talent, though. Nick Apex, Ernie Vigil, Dan Jackson, Chris McNeil, Alex Flores, Jesse Toler and many others were not in attendance. But to win the bike, any man would have to slay 2009’s unslayable dragon, Bill D. Top rider Brian Bubash also looked great and was going to be tough to handle. To be successful in the StarBoyz event, you had to do well in all four competitions: individual freestyle, wheelie race, longest stoppie and a freestyle obstacle course.
